What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown (or cap) is a permanent covering that encases the entire surface of your existing tooth to restore its original shape, size, and color. A porcelain crown protects and strengthens a tooth that cannot be restored or corrected with fillings or other types of restorations.

Dental crowns are made of porcelain or acrylic composites, and each one is custom-molded to fit your smile and dyed to match the color of your surrounding teeth. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain tooth-colored crowns are the most popular because they resemble the look and feel of your natural teeth.

Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth for a natural, long-lasting, beautiful smile. They are highly durable and will last many years with proper dental hygiene and regular checkups.

When a New Dental Crown Can Help

Porcelain dental crowns are both restorative and cosmetic, so we may recommend them to patients who have:

  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Cosmetic concerns
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings

In addition, crowns are also used in our office to restore and protect a tooth after root canal therapy.

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create the custom porcelain crown. Then, our dentist will remove any decay and shape the tooth’s surface to properly fit the crown. After the tooth has been prepared and cleaned out, your temporary crown will be placed with a short-term bonding agent and adjusted for your comfort. You’ll wear the temporary crown for approximately two weeks while the permanent version is fabricated in a dental laboratory.

At your second appointment, we’ll clean the tooth and swap the temporary crown for the new, custom-fabricated crown. Once placed, the crown can be adjusted to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate, and our team will give you personalized care instructions.

After receiving a porcelain crown, regular dental visits to Associates in Family Dentistry are still important for maintenance. We always encourage you to contact our office in Aurora, CO, if you have any questions or concerns.
